To have an NYC wedding is among the most exhilarating and energetic experiences that one can have. The passion, energy, and life that this city holds are unlike any other. It can be hard to decide where to take photographs or hold special ceremonies, as there are a plethora of options and something for each unique couple. As a New York City wedding photographer, I get to experience people on the happiest day of their lives, in a city alive and pulsing with passion. One of my favorite spots to photograph weddings occurs in an oasis within the chaos, in Central Park, specifically in The Loeb Boathouse in the park.
By peeling back the intense, overwhelming, and exciting energy of Manhattan, you are instantly met with a serene oasis in Central Park and its Boathouse. From the Boathouse, the only indication of being inside the world’s busiest and most exciting city is the distant view of the skyscrapers and the eclectic, lively energy the people carry into this oasis. The serenity of being surrounded by trees, water, and wildlife seems to melt away the city’s stresses from the moment you take a deep breath within it.

The tranquility and natural beauty of the Boathouse and Central Park make this the ideal place to focus on a special day such as a wedding. This is because of the unique mix of tranquil and exciting energies and the evolving current of history within it. The luxury of having an expansive and exciting green space such as Central Park within a beautiful city cannot be understated. During the weekends, one can see rowers taking off the Boathouse area, getting together with others to watch a show, taking an afternoon stroll, or getting together with friends to play volleyball or croquet. This great space acts to rejuvenate all who walk through, no matter what they are doing. Whether the visit is brief or for a whole day, it is sure to make anyone feel centered and at peace with themselves after spending any time in this picturesque hideaway.

The Boathouse and Central Park are safe havens that act as the ideal place for a wedding centered on the multiple facets of love. In a sense, a New York City wedding held in Central Park or by the Boathouse holds the very essence of what a happy marriage is: it represents how life can seem to pull you in each direction and be overwhelming at times just like Manhattan can, but as long as one remembers to retreat into a calm oasis with your loved one such as the Boathouse or Central Park, you can weather any storm. To have a beautiful wedding reception or engagement shoot by the Boathouse or in Central Park is to start the union with peace and serenity that will last throughout the marriage, while also being prepared to tackle the challenges and victories that life presents.

As a New York City wedding photographer, I photograph the making of history in places already richly steeped in the history of other romances, weddings, and happy days past. The Boathouse has been a popular venue for romantic getaways and serene escapes since the mid-1800s. It is no surprise that it holds the energy of its own. Stepping into historical space, one is met with a feeling of being both mindfully at the moment through the serenity of its natural gifts, while also being drawn to its energizing and tantalizing past. Space beckons you forward to imagine what kind of a day people spent in this park 25, 50, 100, or even 150 years back in time.

The love envelops every step that a new couple takes that couples who came before them took together once. Perhaps they were childhood sweethearts, or they had been set up by friends or family. Maybe they were young and fresh-faced, or they were finding love at a mature age. No matter the circumstances, the shared experience was one of love and happiness at the prospect of spending life with someone they loved. As you take your first steps as a married couple, you are joining a long line of other couples who celebrated their unique love right where you are standing and went on to cherish their memories for the rest of their lives. As an NYC wedding photographer, I get the privilege of helping create and capture the memories that will be cherished in the future. I get to be a part of history as it unfolds before me.

I take the responsibility seriously because I understand the importance of bringing the passion for capturing the moments right so that the couple can adequately remember and cherish their day in this special oasis. I aim to understand the history and the essence of the venue to best capture its unique beauty. However, it is most important that I get to know the distinctive personalities and love languages of the couple, so that I can better understand the essence of the day, as the couple experiences it.

A wedding photographer takes photographs of a particular moment and is also responsible for communicating the emotions, the love, the excitement, and the energy of the special day back to the couple. I need to be able to reflect all of the beauty that I see in a way that will fully be communicated to an onlooker. The challenge is capturing the small glances, whispered “I love you,” the deep breath of anticipation before a bride walks down the aisle, the groom catching his breath when she sees her walking down, the emotion captured in a tear rolling down a mother’s cheek, and the proud glint in the eye of a father. These small, “blink, and you’ll miss it” moments truly create the essence of a photograph taken on your wedding day. I aim to understand the couple and their loved ones so that I can anticipate these moments and capture them properly so that they are memorialized for years to come.

To have the privilege of communicating such powerful and vibrant stories back to the characters of the real story is a gift within itself. Doing it in a haven such as Central Park or the Boathouse makes the experience of photographing wedding ceremonies or engagements one that I treasure every time I get to do it. I know that each couple sees the space as their oasis, and I feel impassioned each time I get to experience it from their particular lens. Each time is different; however, walking onto the familiar path, I cannot help but recall all of the previous times that this space has served as an oasis for other people’s love stories. These stories are held together and captured in the area, which is felt by the venue’s unique energy and beauty. With their rich history and rejuvenating powers, the Boathouse and Central Park are beautiful treasures of Manhattan. As a New York City wedding photographer, I feel happy and grateful to be able to take just a snapshot of the ever-evolving and growing power of these spaces and the unique and mysterious love stories of each couple that I get to photograph and get to know.
